In this famous story, we see Jesus inviting Peter to step out of the boat into the water. At that compelling instance, it is intriguing to conjecture what might have been going through Peter's mind. Apart from the well known fact that humans cannot walk on water, it is interesting to remember that Peter was a fisherman, and thus very aware of the dangers of a violent sea. At that moment he could have thought of all the implications of what Jesus was asking him to do. But he didn't. This experienced sea man took the step out of the boat and obeyed Jesus' command : "COME".
Today, reflecting on this text, I began to think about the many times the Lord had asked me to go forth but I stayed in place pondering over the drawbacks of obeying that decision. This text reminds us to have an uncompromising attitude of obedience to the voice of the Lord. It could be for a small task as picking up a friends fallen pen for him or a huge task as starting a Bible discussion group. However, regardless of the nature of the call, all that He desires of us is to respond positively to it.
I pray that today as we hear His command we will place aside all distractions and choose to obey His voice; COME!
