When I survey.

I recently attended a choral program dubbed "Road to the cross", and I was struck deeply by this hymn. I hope you assimilate the words and ponder over them.

When I survey the Wondrous Cross by Isaac Watts

  1. When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
  2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
  3. See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
  4. Were the whole realm of nature mine,
    That were a present far too small;
    Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Modern gods.

Bowing to a tree or stone seems so antiquated. Its rare to find someone in our modern society who openly subscribes to traditional worship. We place a negative tag on idols which is all well and good. However, in retrospect, are we not bowing down to the contemporary idols? Yes, the modern day idols having names like work, marriage, self to mention but a few. Most of us have made these contemporary gods rulers of our lives.

In Jeremiah 2, the Lord bemoans the worship of gods by the people of Israel. He desires that they come back to Him. Today, He still calls us with the same cry. Our jealous God does not want anything to come between us and Him. What modern god have you allowed to rule your life. Lets us stop the idol worship and embrace the Lord fully.
